This is an excellent book for 2nd grade grammar. We're not using the creative writing parts of the book, only the grammar portion. The jingles are great for helping the kids remember the parts of speech and what they do. If they get stuck with something, we just go back to the jingle and they can usually figure it out on their own just by reciting the jingle back to themselves. If you're homeschooling classically, Shurley Grammar works very well with that style of education, too.

If you want to teach your child useless skills such as diagramming, this book is for you. However, it may hinder your child's love and appreciation for English literature. It makes English a boring subject. Instead, let your child read books, write about them, and teach them grammar as you correct their mistakes. Much more fun and practical.
