Decent Homeschooling EnglishNov 07, 2005
By Samuel Dylan Hrncir We use this with our 11 year old daughter in homeschool. The method is good, she seems to have no problem when test time comes. It's VERY repetitive, so if you have a very fast learner I would not recommend it for them. It works great for my daughter.
My only question about the method is the time spent "classifying" sentences. I only question it because I didn't learn this in school and I don't think that it really matters all that much in written English. But daily you spend about 5 minutes on it, so it's easy to look past that.
The jingles are a little reminiscent of SchoolHouse Rocks!, so it actually helps them learn. When it comes to test time I am happy when I notice my daughter reciting the jingles to come up with some of the answers.
It's a very dedicated one on one program (you actually have to be around for this class:) so that could be a con for some who don't have the time to dedicate to it. We spend on average about 45 minutes a day on this class. I think that minimum you could possibly spend would be about 30 minutes a day.
It's a good program for those who need repetition and we will use it again next year (if we continue to homeschool).

English as it should be taughtOct 30, 2007

We have used the Shurley Homeschool Level 5 course in the past year. It is the best course in English for native English speakers that I have ever seen. I was a little nervous about the jingles, because on first glance they seem a little dopey, but they turned out to be very helpful. The approach to sentence structure uses diagramming and this is extremely important. It fosters an analytical view of writing that children will be able to use the rest of their lives. Additionally, it will facilitate learning any foreign language, because the student will remember English syntax this way, and have it to compare to the new language he may be learning.
Their approach to writing is not taught in Maryland public schools, and this is a lost art. The standardized approach to writing in the Shurley method used to be taught in some private schools, but is now only occasionally found. This is the beauty of this method: a student who spends only a year using it will have a lifelong skill in expressing himself that most college students now lack.
We have seen our 6th grader's writing skills improve immeasurably because of the Shurley program. I can't recommend it highly enough to anyone who wants his children to know English as few these days know it.

Shurley EnglishOct 01, 2008
By Tami Claassen Great English book!!! You know all that stuff you learned in school about nouns, pronouns, direct objects and indirect objects, etc and now you've forgotten it all - You can teach it to your kids with this text book!! The jingles tell you all you need to know!! This is a sixth grade book I bought for my fifth grader and my eighth grader even refers to the jingles. The actual toon of the jingles and the lady singing them on the CD stink!!! My kids make up their own toon. They can make them rock-n-roll or rap if they want too and they have fun doing it not even realizing how much they are learning!!! The book teaches not only by jingles but by written direction and diagramed examples. It even tells you what to say and do so that your child gets the most out of it. You can't miss with this text book!!!
