Fans of SaxonDec 30, 2009
By Shannyn Bishop Snyder We are homeschoolers and have been using Saxon Math for four years. If you get this book, you will NOT need Algebra 1/2, as this book ends with all of the skill sets needed to go into Algebra 1. We never used the solutions manual, but everything else is necessary to teach and learn.

Quality Higher Math BooksMar 26, 2011
By Tracy1311 I purchased these books for my 14 year old son. He wants to do an Engineering Degree in a few years. So far so good. He has changed over from MUS and really likes the new format and content of the Saxon Math. I decided to change him over to Saxon because a friend approached Melbourne University, showed them Saxon Math, and was advised that it would be very good preparation for an Engineering Degree. I believe the spaced repetition structure of the books will really help my son to retain the information he has already learnt. Also he likes the variety of questions and enjoys being challenged to really think in each lesson. From a teacher's perspective, I find the new concept explanation easy to understand and feel confident this product will fully meet our Math needs. I thoroughly recommend this product.

Good Preparation for Algebra; Great for Dedicated HomeschoolersMar 10, 2011
By Fr. Charles Erlandson We homeschooled our kids over a period of years, and Saxon Math, including Math 87, was always our choice for math texts. I also teach in a classical Christian school where we use Saxon Math as well. I find that for most students, if they will take the time to read the lesson well, do all of the problems, and then rework any problems they miss then they will achieve a high degree of mastery of the material at hand.
Math 87 will prepare the advanced student for Algebra 1, without having to proceed to Algebra ½. This will only be true if both student and teacher are diligent in doing all of the problems, checking them immediately, and reworking any missed problems.
The greatest advantage of Saxon Math is that each lesson provides practice not only for the new problems but also built-in review for every kind of problem the student has previously encountered. Math 87 is no exception to the rule that Saxon Math texts help students learn math well. After 87, all of my kids who have taken it were definitely ready to move on to the next level, although I chose to have my daughter get the extra practice of doing Algebra ½ as well.
In general, Saxon Math, including Math 87, is highly recommended. It is especially ideal for homeschooling families.
This Kit contains all the homeschooling family needs to teach Math 87, including tests and answers, and not just the text or additional review.

The materials are well organized and complete. I hold a bachelor's degree in mathematics, and I wish my college texts had used this teaching method. The method introduces only a few concepts in each lesson, and exercises employing those concepts are then provided. However, at both the beginning and the end of the lesson, cumulative review exercises are provided. The method requires more work (more actual problem solving) than a traditional math textbook, but the payoff is better comprehension and retention.
I am using this program to homeschool my son. He just completed Lesson 30 (of 120). I have had to do very little other than check his work. He simply reads the lessons and does the exercises -- essentially teaching himself. I have had to provide very little additional instruction.
We will definitely follow this with Saxon's Algebra I kit.
