They speak Vietnamese!Oct 26, 2010
By Noname I bought Rosetta Stone Homeschool Levels 1-3 (version 3) directly from Rosetta Stone, because that would give me the six month money back guarantee. I mainly want to have my kids understand and communicate with the Vietnamese in my area, who mainly speak with the Southern Vietnamese accent. If I had a choice, I'd buy Rosetta Stone South Vietnamese accent, but that's not available.
I'm not sure exactly what accent is on the Rosetta Stone Homeschool, because I'm not familiar with them all. It's definitely not South Vietnamese. The Rosetta Stone accent has more muted tones.
WHAT'S INCLUDED
In the box, I got the Rosetta Stone Software, the audio companion CD's for all three levels, a parent's guide supplemental educational materials, and a headset.
The audio CDs are to be used only in conjunction with the software. Otherwise, it's too confusing, since it's completely in Vietnamese.
The parent's guide is very basic. It helps the parent decide which curriculum to choose along with a sample of 36 or 45 week lesson plans.
The supplemental educational materials is just a CD-ROM with PDF's of every Rosetta Stone language software with the phrases from all the cards from each lesson of the program. It could possibly be used as a reference to maybe see where the course is heading but is otherwise not useful as educational material. Tests and worksheets are included for only a select few languages. Vietnamese is not one of them.
The headset is nice. The cord is very long, there's no on/off switch. Sound quality is good, so no complaints.
INSTALLATION
Installation was easy. The software can be installed in up to two computers. I decided to do the full Homeschool installation in the kitchen computer and install only the Vietnamese language discs onto my Rosetta Stone TOTALe in my office computer (I already have TOTALe French there).
Up to five learners can be added to each computer. I only added my two children to the kitchen computer.
COMPARING HOMESCHOOL WITH TOTALe OR ROSETTA STONE (version 3)
Homeschool Vietnamese has some advantages over TOTALe and Rosetta Stone version 3:
1) TOTALe can only be installed on one computer. Homeschool can be installed on two computers.
2) Compared to TOTALe, there are eight learning paths. TOTALe has four.
3) Children can be tested and placed into appropriate levels. No testing option is provided in TOTALe.
4) Unlike TOTALe and version 3, Homeschool allows the parents to track their children's progress at a glance.
For parents who would like the games and online communities on TOTALe, it must be noted that children under 13 are not allowed in Rosetta World anyway, so TOTALe would be a waste of money.
CURRICULA
There are 7 different curriculum options:
1) Full year. This is the most comprehensive and includes reading, writing, grammar, speaking. There is something called Adaptive Recall, which helps kids on skills they need to keep working on. It also features more repetition.
2) Standard. This on is more streamlined. It also has Adaptive Recall; but unlike the full year curriculum, it does not have repetition of lessons.
3) Standard with Reading Intro. The standard course with an introduction to letters and sounds.
4) Extended. This is the standard lesson with additional practice on grammar, listening, speaking and vocabulary.
5) Extended with Reading Intro. This is the extended program with lessons on letters and sounds.
6) Reading & Writing Focus.
7) Reading & Writing with Intro. This is Reading & Writing Focus with an emphasis on the alphabet. It goes through level 1 only.
8) Speaking & Listening Focus.
Students who are somewhat familiar with Vietnamese may use the following placement options:
1) Placement. Students are tested to place them in the proper level.
2) Listening Placement.
3) Reading Placement.
4) Reading & Writing Placement.
My children are taking the Speaking and Listening Focus curriculum, which does not force them to type. I found typing in Rosetta Stone to be very tedious, unless one does not care to make the proper accent marks. When typing an "a" with a carat on top and a downward facing accent mark, I must first type "a," then use my mouse to click on the "a" with the carat, then click one more time to get the "a" with the carat and the accent mark. That's just one letter.
LESSONS
The lessons are broken down into three levels. Each level is broken down into 4 units. Each unit has four core lessons. Following each core lesson are sub-lessons. (level>unit>core lesson>sub-lesson)
The core lessons last the longest, about half an hour. The sub-lessons last about five to ten minutes and go over different aspects presented in the core lesson, like vocabulary, pronunciation, etc.
CONCLUSION
My children are six and nine and are native English speakers. They did not quite get what was going on with the first core lesson, but they are picking it up very quickly now. Every day, we do one sub-lesson. About once every week or two, we do a core lesson. I am amazed at the speed at which they are learning. Can they communicate what they know to a person with a South Vietnamese accent? Yes. Can they understand someone with a South Vietnamese accent? Yes. It's not perfect and they stumble; but once they figure it out, they have no problem. So, although I would have preferred a Vietnamese version with the Southern accent, this one seems to be working as intended.
PROS: + can install on two computers (compared to one for TOTALe) + up to five learners can be added to each computer + eight different curricula to choose from + placement testing + audio CD's + track children's progress + easy to learn + six month money back guarantee when bought directly from Rosetta Stone
CONS: - typing is tedious
