This was my first time trying a Rosetta product so instead of buying an entire language series, I decided to try just the level 1 to see if their system of teaching Portuguese would work for me. As someone who already knows a fair amount of Spanish, I found learning the beginnings of Portuguese with this product has been incredibly fun and addictive.
What you can expect:
- Nothing but Portuguese spoken to you except for the occasional instructions on the audio CD companion. This does make figuring out new words a little challenging at times, but once I got it, the extra effort made it easier to remember from that point forward.
- An emphasis on the spoken language. Most of the exercises help you to speak or listen to Portuguese. There are some reading and writing exercises, but at least at this level, it is only a sprinkling. For me this was fine since the listening and speaking aspects of a language tend to be harder for me than reading and writing it.
- Basic pronunciation. The software can listen to the way you speak words and help you identify which sounds you are having problems with. There is an option where a word is spoken more slowly so you can catch the fine details you might miss otherwise. I've tried what I know on native Portuguese speakers with reasonable success. I clearly still have an accent to their ears, but with some repeating of my words and phrases to native speakers, I've been able to communicate basic concepts entirely in Portuguese.
