Good ProgramJul 04, 2007
By booklover I bought the textbook & workbook level 1A to provide enrichment for my 6 yr.old son who attends public school where they teach the Everyday Math curriculum. When I ordered these books I opted NOT to order a teachers manual (for home use) because I thought it would be a waste of money. Now in retrospect I think it would have been a good idea to buy one. The material presented is very good, however, there are very few explanations or ideas for parents. The text has 9 units but does not break these units into lessons. Should it take 4 days to cover the number bonds unit or 4 weeks? Its up to you. The bottom line is that this math program is teacher driven. The teacher must be able to lead the student through the text with YOUR OWN lessons and activities. The teacher must decide how fast or slow to go and how to provide alternative explanations if the student doesn't "get it". Be prepared to do some planning before you sit down each day to instruct your child. Also, you should purchase math manipulatives and be ready to improvise. I have not seen the teachers manual but it may be worth buying just for more ideas and activities. In my opinion children can not work through these books alone. This curriculum is only as good as the teacher is knowledgeable and competent instructing. If you are using the program just for enrichment purposes consider skipping the textbook/workbook and instead select one of the other workbooks available. I purchased Intensive Practice along with the textbook & workbook and quickly realized this was way too much for enrichment. If possible I would recommend reviewing all the workbooks FIRST (if you can find them) before purchasing to better decide which books will best meet your needs.

Excellent Math Starter but need a workbookMay 07, 2009
By Nii-Akwei Acquaye This book introduces the 1st Grade Math concepts very well, however you will need a workbook to have your first grader practice the concepts introduced to them.
