Built In Review Makes This Kit a Winner, Especially for HomeschoolersMar 05, 2011
By Fr. Charles Erlandson We homeschooled our kids over a period of years, and Saxon Math, including Math 54, was always our choice for math texts. I also teach in a classical Christian school where we use Saxon Math as well. I find that for most students, if they will take the time to read the lesson well, do all of the problems, and then rework any problems they miss then they will achieve a high degree of mastery of the material at hand.
The greatest advantage of Saxon Math is that each lesson provides practice not only for the new problems but also built-in review for every kind of problem the student has previously encountered. Math 54 is no exception to the rule that Saxon Math texts help students learn math well. After Math 54, all of my kids who have taken it were definitely ready to move on to the next level.
In general, Saxon Math, including Math 54, is highly recommended. It is especially ideal for homeschooling families. This homeschooling kit has all that you need. But don't worry about getting overwhelmed: for the most part, Saxon is easy to use.

Saxon Math Homeschool 5/4Oct 05, 2010
By C. M. Morris Great math program for my son. Love the reviewing process. My child never forgets what he learned in previous lessons, making the tests much easier for him.

By N. Brendlinger This is a very good 4th grade math resource. However, keeping up with the teacher's prep is exhausting when schooling many different grade levels. Especially, when using an English program that also requires substantial prep time.
a nice surpriseMar 28, 2012
By D. Taylor We have purchased this for our 4th grader as it came highly recommended by our Classical Conversations community. I was a bit discouraged when I was browsing the web - it seemed confusing and hard to find the placement test and sample pages.. I finally just asked a friend for a direct link to purchase what I need (our kids are the same level). At first I was very dissapointed. We used Horizons Math before and loved it! I saw the reviews for Saxon stressed the frequent repetition of old topics as an advantage, and we got plenty of that with Horizons too. Horizons also was a lot more colorful (it was important for my child) and she could write directly in the book. Not with this book - you need to have a seperate note book where your student will copy the problems and write the answers. On top of that it looked like my girl (after finishing 3rd grade with Horizons) was WAY advanced for this textbook. She literaly laughed out loud when she saw Roman numerals introduced AT THE END of her new book. Well, we took a leap of faith anyway and started with the new curriculum. I did have her do 2 lessons in one day (I marked only half the problems for her to do, making sure she does all the important ones ;)). Lo and behold we are both in love - she gets a great boost of confidence because she is familiar with a lot of concepts and the fact that she can zip through the book so fast, doing 2 lessons at a time, she also gets an awesome review of the basics AND her mental math skills are just super improved!
After about 3 weeks into it though I am feeling the need to slow down and keep it to a lesson a day and that's good too ;) I am optimistic about this math now, even though we both still miss Horizons :)
