It's not the original, but it has meritNov 20, 2011
By SRQCherry No, this is not the original that I remember, but it still has merit. My son got this for his 4th birthday and I got so excited because I fondly remember my Lite Brite from 30 years ago. It was the only toy we got out after his party and before bed (he was pretty overwhelmed and tired from the party), but despite being tired, we did a whole design. I didn't recall LB being educational, but it is. It requires capital letters to be recalled (there are 8-10 different colors, so that many letters need to be matched to the corresponding peg). There is instant feedback if the child matches the wrong color to a letter since the mistake will show up in the pattern. Finally, it's great fine motor skill work. Pushing those little pegs into the board is a bit difficult (in an okay way) so that the little muscles in their hands work hard grasping the pegs.
I would say it's not terribly bright, however if you put in perspective, you do realize it lights up pretty well. By turning the light off w/the pattern complete, then back on, it's easy to see that the pegs have lit up.
My son did get a little frustrated towards the end, but again, he was tired. I think all in all, it will be a nice toy. Not amazing, but not a total dud. I would say easily, a 6 year old-8 year old would love it! A patient 4 or 5 year old will also enjoy it.

LED is not brightOct 24, 2011
By Michael J. Morgan The LEDs don't do a very good job lighting up the pegs. Some of the colored pegs barely even light up. Disappointed with the back light.

Good for what you pay for.Jan 07, 2012
By T.C. This throwback to the original Lite Brite does what the original did, but not much more. The light dispersion left something to be desired as some pegs are VERY bright, and some just a dull glow. P.S. Remember when you buy this, it comes with limited pegs and pages, so you WILL have to buy more in the expansion kits. (You can substitute the blank black pages with simple black construction paper cut to size)

Very dimJan 31, 2012
By Nonfiction This product is incredibly dimly lit. I hope Hasbro will fix it in the next version because lite brite has traditionally been a fun toy that is great for fine motor skills.

Do yourself a favor and get the originalJan 20, 2012
By E. Mills I was excited for my boy to receive this for Christmas because I had so much fun with Lite Brite when I was his age. But this LED kind has no merit when compared with the original. My two big issues with it are these: 1-The light doesn't shine equally across the whole board. A few pegs will light up brightly, some a little, and a lot of them won't light up at all because the light doesn't engulf them properly. The pegs are also really hard to get out. My boy couldn't do it, and it was no treat for me either. I want to get rid of this and get the original design if I can.
