Excellent spelling program for your second grader!Jul 21, 2011
By greatlakes gal This program is great for teaching your children (at home or classroom) spelling. Each week has its own list of words which include both words with spelling patterns and sight-words. Each day of the week includes some form of work assignment involving the list of words. First day: listen to the word and rewrite, as well as alphabetize; Second day: flip-and-write and capital print; Third day: dictation sentences; Fourth day: first test (if the student gets 100%, he does not need to repeat it the fifth day); Fifth day: second test.
The pattern of daily work assignments is great for your student as it gets him/her to work with the words differently each day. The dictation sentences were challenging for my daughter, especially in the beginning, but it has been EXCELLENT in improving her skills in listening and memorizing and structuring sentences while putting the spelling word in context. It has been one of the hardest things she did this year but the hard work has truly paid off. It is fun to compare how she did at the beginning of the year, esp. with sentences that were more simple, with the end of the year. This is true for each part of the daily work, from alphabetizing to learning how to take a test.
This is designed for classrooms but it is not difficult to use for homeschool. The sheets are reproducible and there are not any designs or pictures on the worksheets. This was fine as it kept my daughter's attention on the spelling words themselves. The only issue I do have with the program (which would NOT keep me from using it-we're also going to use the third grade program) is that I wasn't certain what to do for my daughter when she did misspell words during dictation or test time. I had her rewrite sentences misspelled for dictation and rewrite words for test time, but I think this is where the differences come in for classroom and homeschool curriculum. Perhaps at school, a teacher would correct the sentences and send the work home with the child, and then the child and parents would work on it together to prepare for the test the next day (just assuming, here!). Also, I would have liked some additional guidance about test-giving in terms of how much time to give to spell each word, how much time to review at the end (if at all). The directions say "give ample time" but I was never sure if we were going too slow or too fast. Even a suggested time frame to start from would be helpful and would have helped me better understand if we were a bit behind or right on (being behind would be fine, it would just be helpful to know). But this is nit-picking; we worked out what worked best for us and I saw her spelling improve greatly over the year.
