Cheaper Buckyballs... but not perfect.Apr 08, 2010
By RayRay I saw my friend's buckyballs and wanted some. I saw the 7x7 cybercube and thought I'd give it a shot. More balls the better, right? Well, they do not come with a storage case like the buckyballs. They come in a cheap cardboard box. Not a big deal in my opinion. They are just as much fun as buckyballs. They look and act pretty much identically, but you have more of them and can create (slightly) bigger designs and sculptures.
Then I noticed my hand are covered in glitter. The chrome coating on the balls is coming off. I don't see any obvious spots on the balls where the chrome is missing, but you can easily see the flakes of it on the magnets. Every time you play with them, you end up being covered in glitter. The "glitter" is attracted to the magnets, so it is not easy to get rid of and if you do get rid of it, more of it flakes off anyway. The chrome doesn't effect the magnets at all, but its flaking off is an annoyance.
Overall: You get what you pay for. These are fun to play with. Unfortunately the coating on them isn't a durable as more expensive substitutes. I don't regret buying them, but I wouldn't buy any more of them.
Edit: On closer inspection, there are some dull spots on some of the magnets from where the chrome has come off. They are hard to notice, but they are indeed there.

Couldn't put the confounded thing down!, but...Jul 09, 2010
By M. Ramey
"Christian"
When this arrived in the mail, my wife couldn't believe I would pay $25 for it. "What's the point" she said. Hah, well maybe it is pricey, but once I gave her a hunk to play with, she just kept playing with it, and playing with it, and playing with it, and eventually showed me all sorts of "things" she managed to make from it!
Anyway, once I got a hold of it, and pried all the rest out of my wife & kids hands, it was hard to put it down. There are endless amounts of things you can make with this.
A few gripes: - The toy comes with an "instruction book" on lots of neat things you can make, but they don't provide any step-by-steps (other than the 7x7 cube) of how to actually make them. Even the 7x7 cube instructions are a bit vague, since it's very hard to line up the mangnets before you do the folding. I suggest going to youtube and searching for "neo", "bucky balls", or "cybercube" and there are plenty of people who tell you how to make things.
- There are NO extra magnets that come with the set, unlike many other magnet sets like this out there. That means if you lose just one ball, you won't be making the 7x7 cube!
Overall though, this thing is great for "geeky" and perhaps "not-so-geeky" people. The instructions are adamant not to let children play with it, but my two five-year-olds played just fine with it and loved it.
***Update!* Whoa there on the 5 star review. After about a week of use, I noticed some rough edges on some of the balls. Upon further inspection, I noticed that about .5mm round chunks of flakes were chipping off the edge of some of the balls, leaving a dull gray (probably the magnet) underneath. So far it's not affecting the performance, but if it gets much worse, I know the magnets themselves are very brittle, and could fall apart.
***Update again! Been a few months now, the metal has worn off to the point of affecting how the toy performs. For example, when I make a simple flat hexagon using all the balls, it won't sit flat on my desk. The chips cause it to bend slightly, creating a wavy look. Also some of the chipped metal is quite large now, at least 1mm holes, and growing! I think if I had to do it over again, I'd purchase "nanodots". They are apparently built to last. I've heard good things about BuckyBalls not chipping too.
***Final update It has been almost a year since my purchase. This thing is just gross to play with now, and I think after reading the safety warnings I'm about done with this toy. Nearly every magnet has about a 1mm circle of exposed magnet on both it's north and south poles. My fingers get this black dust all over them when I manipulate the balls, and the black dust gets on other objects the magnets stick to.

7^3 BuckyBallsOct 26, 2009
By Simon T. Oldham Having looked at these on any number of sites like ThinkGeek, it was a pleasant surprise to find this augmented set available on Amazon. Most other sets seem to be 6x6x6. Granted, these are a wee bit smaller than the 6x6x6 sets but you can't really complain about the extra you get. Lots of fun, people that you wouldn't think about enjoying such a geeky wee toy are all over these. They are seriously one of the best cube toys, to keep peoples hands busy while they are talking with you. People using their hands whilst talking seem to make more sense, strange though it may appear. Just watch out, they are serious time wasters, not to mention a challange that is difficult to put down.

Don't get Bucky Balls, get the 7x7 Cybercube!Jan 29, 2010
By George Crudo I recently purchased the 7x7 Cybercube Green Box and I must say it is certainly the best deal available in it's field. All the other brand cubes come in 6x6x6 forms but here you get more spheres for your money. 127 additional spheres to be exact and you certainly can't go wrong with that! They're addictive and I often times find myself saying I'm only going to play with it for five minutes and end up trying to make something that takes an hour or two. It's quite a unique toy and if you don't have one yet, now's your chance to get the best deal available. Hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine!

Great toy!Jul 28, 2010
By Just Me The kids love it and can spend hours playing with it! 300+ magnets are just enough to build some basic "stuff", I'm planning to buy more. I could not resist and played myself, it is really fun and quite relaxing:-) A great stress reliever! My only complain is that the magnets are peeling, the hands get black and I'm not sure they are safe after that.
