excellent!Jan 04, 2010

I am so impressed with this series, I am here on Amazon trying to find a similar book for my kindergartner. This book is a complete series of worksheets, to be done in the book or torn out, including lessons prior to the work. My fourth grade daughter is homeschooled, as are my other three children. We struggled to find the perfect curriculum that allowed her to work on her own for a good potion of the day, while including work that we could go through together when we chose, if the younger children weren't demanding my hands-on attention. The lessons n this book are perfect. The instructions are clear enough that if I need her to self direct with minimal input from me, she can. The pages are all in color, graphic and engaging. The subject matter doesn't include science or social studies/history, other than briefly in some of the reading comprehension and writing assignments. We prefer to use field trips and experiments for those two subjects, however harcourt publishing also offers some excellent, well=priced single subject workbooks that cover those topics. All around great purchase- enough material to last an entire school year, oh-and at the back there are a ton of standardized form tests from each subject, plenty of prep for homeschoolers or any child. There is an answer key for the entire book at the back, perforated, so you can tear it out and keep separately. Fyi- I bought mine for 19.99 at my local B&Noble, I've seen it on Amazon for up to 39.99.

Logical, complete, and effective presentation and practiceSep 02, 2011
By Mama Mia I have homeschooled for over a decade and have spent thousands of dollars on "just the right" curriculum. I purchased this workbook for my daughter last year for something extra for her to do on her own while I worked with my older children. Sad to say, I like it better than the expensive stuff I had been using with her. It is logical and complete in it's presentation, gives adequate practice, but doesn't load either of us down with too many "bells and whistles". Using this workbook for math and language arts frees up my time so we can get through history, science, religion, and electives with more fun and consistency. I've never trusted "complete" workbooks before because they were all clearly made for review and weren't adequate as core curriculum. These Flash Kids workbooks, however, are genuinely complete and thoroughly cover all the necessary grade level expectations. It does streamline the topics covered so as to focus on what's needed to be learned and not on creative thinking and problem solving or other ways of looking at topics. It's very simple and straight-forward with all the stuff your child will need to be well-grounded in to pass grade level standardized tests well. For us, the clear and straightforward presentation of core topics without all the fluffy extras is exactly what helps make the academic material sink in best so I feel my daughter is actually learning better with this workbook than with the more complicated single-subject material we had been using. And there's only one book, complete with answer key in the back, so it's easy to keep track of. My daughter isn't able to work through it without my involvement, but it's simple instruction style makes it quick and easy for me to explain and then move on. It does not do any review in each lesson but rather focuses exclusively on the topic and slowly builds on ideas sequentially from lesson to lesson. There is a review at the end of each unit, however. That's the style that works for us, personally, but the lack of intense review might be a problem for some kids.
