 Excellent resource for homeschool families!May 31, 2008

I have had the privilege of reading Dr. Ruth Beechick's newest book, A Biblical Home Education, and as a seasoned homeschool mom, I learned so much from her years of wisdom. She does not recommend a big, fancy curriculum to teach your children. She starts out by recommending that you use the Bible as your main curriculum. And later in the book she gives a few specific book suggestions. But her first goal is to let you know that it is okay to not depend on a curriculum to prepare your children for his or her future. She suggests that you allow your child to grow in the Lord, and your first responsibility is to train your child in the ways of the Lord.
I wish I would have had this book several years ago. It is so easy to hear what great things your friends are doing with their children, and then beat yourself up for not doing "the perfect" curriculum like your friend. All familes are different, and all children within a family are different. I have six children, and I see this in action every single day.
This book has practical ideas and suggestions for you to utilize as they suit your family. One of my favorite resources is found at the back of the book. She has included an Appendix with information on Cross-Dominance. If you have a child that easily confuses "b's" and "d's", you know that I am talking about. She has included some exercises to help your child with cross-dominance issues. I also enjoyed her chapter on nutrition for children with behavioral issues.
If you are looking for a good book to rechagre your homeschool this summer, I highly recommend A Biblical Home Education.

Ruth Beechick has written some fantastic resources for home educated families and I have the highest respect for her advocacy of the homeschool lifestyle. I am grateful for her insights into this important movement especially in regard to the Christian family. This book is a good place to seek foundational biblical alignment in the homeschool endeavor, however I wish to point out that the author adheres strongly to the King James Version as the only true English Bible translation. This does not greatly affect the main body of the work but may be confusing to those who are not aware of this controversy and may lead to more questions regarding the trustworthiness of modern translations. I would point to the excellent work by James White "The King James Only Controversy" to give a gracious and very readable handling of this subject. After all, I believe Ms. Beechick would agree in the basic premise to seek truth, especially of the Scriptures, even at the cost of traditions we may hold dear.

"momma roar"
This book is terrific for homeschool moms with any age students. A fresh look going back to the basics and discovering what homeschool is all about. Its not about which curriculum is the best - but how we can bring out the best in our children. This is another one I will reread each summer knowing it will offer me something new each time!

We are a Christian Homeschooling family & it's difficult for me to find our way into what works for us. This book gave me some great Christian advice, tips & resources to help me out. So glad I bought this book. I sat down with pen & paper & took notes & ideas as I read for next years homeschool adventure :)
